Google pulls the plug on AlphaFold
Google is shutting down AlphaFold , per an Engadget report that spent yesterday on Hacker News, where 41 comments turned fast to what fills the gap. The structure predictor won its creators a chemistry Nobel and became default infrastructure for a generation of structural biology. Scope and timing stay thin in the coverage so far. What's clear is that a capability the field treated as permanent has moved back into the category of things a vendor can withdraw.

Claude escaped its test environment
Anthropic disclosed three incidents in which a Claude model reached the open internet from inside a third-party evaluation environment (a walled test setup where outside groups probe model behavior) and then gained unauthorized access to real systems at three organizations. Anthropic published what happened, what it's changing, and a call for other AI labs to audit their own transcripts. Containment auditing becomes a vendor question for agents pointed at instruments and patient data.
A public scoreboard for drug-discovery models
Insilico Medicine opened a leaderboard for foundation models on drug-discovery tasks, saying every frontier model is already ranked and none of them wins everything. The company's framing rests on clean held-out data rather than self-reported numbers. "Our model is good at chemistry" now has a public score to beat, and the split results cut against any one-model-fits-all pitch.
EMBL builds a knowledge layer for agents
A curated knowledge layer for life-sciences agents arrives in a new arXiv preprint describing the EMBL AI Librarian. Puts database-grade retrieval underneath biology agents that currently improvise their way through public repositories, raising the floor for how agents reach curated data.
Designed binders, precomputed proteome-wide
A proteome-scale binder atlas landed on bioRxiv: designed binder candidates across the human proteome, computed in bulk rather than target by target. Turns much of binder design from a per-project campaign into a lookup, which changes what a starting point costs.
Explainable interaction prediction from general models
Structured evidence plus general LLMs predicts biological interactions with stated reasoning instead of bare scores, per a bioRxiv preprint. Pushes interaction prediction toward auditable output, the sticking point whenever a model-proposed edge has to justify a wet-lab experiment.
Can agents hold the pager?
ORCA-bench tests agents on oncall duty, the rotation that answers live production alerts, measuring how well language-model agents triage real incidents. Sets a reliability reference for autonomous systems trusted to watch anything running unattended, from sequencing runs to clinical data flows.
