Google is shutting down AlphaFold , per an Engadget report that spent yesterday on Hacker News, where 41 comments turned fast to what fills the gap. The structure predictor won its creators a chemistry Nobel and became default infrastructure for a generation of structural biology. Scope and timing stay thin in the coverage so far. What's clear is that a capability the field treated as permanent has moved back into the category of things a vendor can withdraw.

The company's framing rests on clean held-out data rather than self-reported numbers. Why it matters

Every discovery workflow resting on a single vendor's hosted model now carries an implicit retirement clause, which makes durability a selection criterion alongside accuracy.
